On July 26, in Los Angeles, a fight for the WBC Continental Americas welterweight title took place between two Armenians born in Yerevan. Gor Yeritsyan defended his belt against Aram Amirkhanyan.
In a match between two undefeated welterweights, Amirkhanyan defeated Gor Yeritsyan by unanimous decision on Friday, June 26, at the Commerce Casino arena. Two judges scored the fight 96-94 in favor of Amirkhanyan, while the third judge scored it 96-94 in favor of Yeritsyan.
Amirkhanyan’s professional boxing record is now 16-0-1, while Gor Yeritsyan saw his first career defeat, now his record is 18-1.
In the middle of the second round, a powerful left cross hit Yeritsyan’s head, causing no visible damage but momentarily disrupting his balance.
Southpaw Amirkhanyan began focusing his attacks on his opponent’s body, using jabs to the face in the third round. A straight right punch pushed Amirkhanyan’s head back with a minute left in the round. Yeritsyan delivered another right to the head shortly before the round ended.
Both fighters performed well in the middle rounds. Yeritsyan skillfully alternated attacks to the head and body, delivering powerful right crosses to Amirkhanyan’s head. Yeritsyan also frequently landed left and right body shots.
Yeritsyan effectively outboxed Amirkhanyan, using distance and regularly countering with straight rights or right crosses to the head. In the eighth round, Yeritsyan developed a cut above his right eye, likely from an accidental head clash.
Amirkhanyan also had his successful moments, sometimes pinning Yeritsyan against the ropes and landing combinations that hit the target. Realizing he was trailing on points, Amirkhanyan went on the offensive in the final two rounds. He was more active, throwing more punches, but the few that landed did not cause serious damage to Yeritsyan, who skillfully countered and outmatched Amirkhanyan in technique.
In his previous fight on July 29 last year, Amirkhanyan defeated Cameron Krael by unanimous decision. His most significant victories came in 2018: a split decision win over Stanislav Skorokhod and a points victory over Hussein Baysangurov.
Both fighters were born and raised in Yerevan, Armenia.
