The Serie A season is over. Inter emerged as the champion, a conclusion known for some time, but the fight for European competition spots and survival continued until the very last match.
Atalanta recently won the Europa League, offering all Italians, and especially Roma fans, the hope of seeing six Italian teams in the Champions League. However, Italy will have only five teams in the Champions League. It could have been six if Atalanta had not beaten Torino in the 38th round and Bologna for 4th place.
Had Atalanta finished 5th, Roma would have qualified for the Champions League from 6th place, as Atalanta already secured a spot by winning the Europa League. Under the new regulations, Italy, like Germany, has five Champions League spots. The top two associations at the end of the 2022/23 season each receive one extra place, and these are Italy and Germany. This regulation only applies when a team finishes just behind the Europa League winner in the league. In this case, Bologna, who already have a Champions League spot, hold that position.
Roma will now compete in the Europa League alongside Lazio, while Fiorentina will play in the Conference League. Fiorentina still has a chance to make an impact this season as they face Olympiacos in the Conference League final. If Fiorentina wins, Italy will have nine clubs in European competitions, with Torino getting a spot in the Conference League and Fiorentina moving to the Europa League.
At the end of the season, Frosinone, Sassuolo, and Salernitana were relegated from Serie A, while Serie B promoted Parma and Como. The final promotion spot will be decided in the play-off final between Cremonese and Venice.
Empoli made an incredible escape from relegation with a 93rd-minute goal against Roma. Their 2-1 win sent Frosinone to Serie B.
Serie A final table:
There is one more rescheduled match, Atalanta vs Fiorentina, but it won't change the standings significantly. Only Atalanta can move up to third place, displacing Juventus.
