A very dramatic and interesting competition unfolded today between an Armenian and a Georgian at the 2024 Youth European Weightlifting Championship in Thessaloniki, Greece.
The battle for gold in the under 96 kg weight category was between Armenian Gevorg Kazaryan and Georgian Luka Silagadze.
Gevorg successfully lifted 165 kg and 168 kg in the clean and jerk, but after the Georgian lifted 169 kg in his final attempt, Gevorg needed to lift 7 kg more to win in the total.
Kazaryan requested exactly what he needed — 175 kg. He almost managed to lift this weight, but the judges inexplicably stopped his performance halfway. As a result, Gevorg Kazaryan became the silver medalist.
