Tennis player Elina Avanesyan, currently ranked 78th in the WTA rankings, will change her sporting citizenship and compete under the Armenian flag.
"I officially announce that very soon tennis player Elina Avanesyan will compete for Armenia and represent our flag," said Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia Karen Giloyan in an interview on Բուն TV.

This decision marks a significant step in Elina Avanesyan's career. Previously, the athlete represented Russia in international tournaments and achieved a number of significant successes, including victories at various levels and stages of the WTA tour. The transition to representing Armenia will open up new opportunities and prospects for her, as well as give a new impetus to the development of tennis in Armenia.
In the most recent Grand Slam tournament, Roland Garros, Elina Avanesyan reached the round of 16, where she lost in three sets to Italian Jasmine Paolini (WTA 7).
Karen Giloyan noted that the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Armenia will provide all necessary support to the tennis player in the process of adapting to the new conditions and preparing for upcoming competitions. He also expressed confidence that Elina will inspire the younger generation of Armenian athletes with her achievements and example.
Elina Avanesyan expressed her joy about the upcoming changes and emphasized that it is a great honor for her to represent Armenia on the international stage. She also thanked her fans for their support and promised to continue delighting them with new victories.
