Armenian athlete Yervand Mkrtchyan delivered an outstanding performance at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, setting a new national record in the 800 meters. Mkrtchyan finished with a time of 1:49.91, placing 51st among 53 participants. Despite not finishing in a medal position, Yervand's achievement became a significant event for Armenian sports, as he surpassed the previous Armenian record for this distance.
Yervand Mkrtchyan, a member of the Armenian Olympic team, debuted in such a large-scale competition. He noted that participating in the Olympics was a significant step in his career, especially considering the setting of an Armenian record. "I am happy to have set a new record for our country, but I understand that this is not my limit. I have another start tomorrow, and I will try to improve my result. As a middle-distance runner, I specialize in the 800 and 1500 meters, and I believe I need to work on my speed," Mkrtchyan shared his impressions.
The Olympic Games in Paris were held at the Stade de France, where about 70,000 spectators watched the competitions. Yervand admitted that such a large number of spectators put pressure on him. "I have never performed in front of such a large audience. I have participated in World and European Championships, but this does not compare with the atmosphere here. It was impressive but also overwhelming. The organization was top-notch, and I am glad that I trained in Paris for the last two weeks, which helped me prepare properly," he said.
President of the Armenian Athletics Federation Robert Emmiyan positively assessed Mkrtchyan's performance. "Yervand is one of Armenia's leading runners. I am happy that he felt the atmosphere of the Olympic Games, gained experience, and set a national record. I hope he will improve his results in tomorrow's performance. Athletics is the jewel of the Olympic Games. Of course, I would like more Armenian athletes to represent our country at these games," noted Emmiyan.
