It's official. Gegard Mousasi is no longer a member of PFL-Bellator. On Thursday, 23 May, PFL league officials announced that Mousasi has been released from his contract after threatening legal action over his dissatisfaction with the company.
"Bellator has released Gegard Mousasi from his contract. We wish him all the best in his next fighting career," Mike Cogan, head of the division, said in a statement.
“We will not comment on the merits of the alleged release at this time for obvious reasons. However, we believe there is a greater lesson here that our community should pay close attention to. For an organization that repeatedly claims to be 'fighter first,' we now truly see how PFL treats their fighters, especially their legends, said Gegard Mousasi's manager, Nima Safapour.
The sports legend's departure from the promotion comes just a day after Mousasi expressed his dissatisfaction with the league over the lack of fight offers. Gegard complained that he was simply not being contacted. He also threatened legal action against the PFL.
Earlier, the Armenian MMA fighter had already raised this topic in an interview. Gegard had two more fights under his contract at Bellator (now PFL), he wanted to have both fights, but did not receive offers.
“Well they said the amount they want to cut me is so much that it is better for me to look somewhere else, do something else. At this moment, listen if someone don’t want me, I’m like f**k it, I go. The team around me, f**k it, we sue them. If it was up to me, I would just go, but I don’t know we will see. But, the team around me is not that happy, I think it is going to be legal action. They don’t even want to pick up their phone and just talk to us. It’s not even funny anymore, it’s the worst organization so far. I’ve fought [for] a lot of organizations, this is the worst one,” Mousasi said on The MMA Hour.
