Today marks the start of the annual Amerigol Latam Cup tournament, held with the support of the NHL, the NHL Players' Association, and the Florida Panthers club. Originally, the tournament was created for teams from North and South America, but over time, teams from other continents also joined.
The main goal of the tournament is to support countries where hockey is just beginning to develop or is not yet widely popular. Some teams do not have official national teams or federations. For example, Armenia's team represents an unofficial team composed of players from the Armenian diaspora.
The Amerigol Latam Cup 2024 will take place in Florida from August 21 to 25 at a small arena owned by the Florida Panthers. This venue is typically used for youth hockey programs and figure skating, not for the NHL team's regular practices.
The tournament will feature men's and women's adult teams, as well as teams from different age groups: U12, U14, and U16.
The Armenia Hockey Club made its debut last year and immediately won the title. In the group stage, the Armenian team dominated Mexico (17:2), defeated Egypt (5:3), and beat Israel (2:0). In the semifinals, they once again overcame Egypt (5:2), and in the final, they convincingly defeated Venezuela with a score of 12:1.
This year, the Armenia team has expanded to two rosters. In Division I, they will face teams from Cuba, Greece, and Lebanon, while in Division II, they will compete against Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and the Mexico Warriors team.
