As part of the third round of the 2024 European Basketball Championship among small countries, which is taking place in Pristina, Kosovo, the Armenian women's national basketball team defeated the Andorra national team with a score of 45-43. This was a significant event for the Armenian team as it was their first official win in the last 14 years.
The last time the women's Armenian national team delighted their fans on the international stage was in 2010, when they won the honorable second place in Yerevan. In their history, the senior women's basketball team from Armenia has participated in international competitions only three times - in 1998, 2004, and 2010. After 2010, the women's team stopped competing, and their return this year has been a long-awaited occasion for many fans.
At the tournament in Pristina, the Armenian national basketball team started with two losses. In the opening game, they faced Norway and lost by a score of 73-70, and in their second game they were defeated by Albania with a final score of 64-60. Despite these setbacks, the team maintained its fighting spirit and prepared for an important match against Andorra.
The Armenian team is coached by Tade Matevosyan. Under his guidance, the team managed to secure third place in Group B and qualify for the playoffs between fifth and ninth places. The Armenian team will take part in two more games at this tournament, scheduled for June 29th and 30th. The opponents have not yet been determined.
Kayla Keshmeshian was the most productive player in the game against Andorra, scoring 13 points. Silvia Vartazarian contributed 6 points and 10 rebounds, while 39-year-old Kristina Kepenekian, who represented the national team in 2010, added 11 more points.
