PopFoot portal has compiled a ranking of the highest number of assists in one season in the 21st century. Former captain of the Armenian national team Henrikh Mkhitaryan was also among the best.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan took the third place in this list with the result of the 2015/16 season at Borussia Dortmund. That season, Mkhitaryan made 20 assists in the Bundesliga, 2 assists in the cup and 9 assists in the Europa League for a total of 31 goal assists.
First place went to Lionel Messi with 34 assists in the 2011/12 season for Barcelona. Juan Mata scored just 1 more assist than Mkhitaryan and took 2nd place with 32 assists, but then he played 15 more matches than Henrikh.
The most frequent presence in the top 10 is Mesut Ozil, the German made 29 assists in three seasons and once 30. Kevin De Bruyne, on the other hand, is the leader in terms of average assists per match. In the 2019/2020 season, the Belgian made 0.56 assists per game, that is more than one efficient pass per 2 games. Henrikh Mkhtitaryan is second in this indicator (0.53).
