Today the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the refusal of the Russian wrestler Shamil Mamedov from the invitation to the Olympics in Paris.
Shamil Mamedov's license was transferred to Moldovan athlete Maxim Sacultan, who took 5th place at the World Championships 2023 in Belgrade. In the fight for the license he lost to the Iranian - Rahman Amuzad.
On June 13, the Russian Wrestling Federation published information that Shamil Mamedov refused to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris due to injury. Mamedov was under strong pressure from the media and the Russian Federation. It can be considered that this also played a big role in the final decision.
Mamedov competes in the weight category up to 65 kg. On July 10, the IOC press service reported that Mamedov had accepted the invitation to the Olympic Games after all. On July 6, the Russian Wrestling Federation announced that Russian wrestlers who had received an invitation from the IOC refused to participate in the Olympics. Mamedov remained the only wrestler who agreed to compete at the Olympics in a neutral status.
