The 20-year-old Bulgarian Carlos Nassar became the Olympic champion in weightlifting, setting world records in the clean and jerk and total with 404 kg (180+224). It is symbolic that Nassar was born in Paris and became an Olympic champion here for the first time.
In the weight category up to 89 kg, the Bulgarian Carlos Nassar and the Colombian Jeison Lopez competed for the championship. They finished the snatch with the same result of 180 kg, but in the clean and jerk, Nassar showed an incredible result. Lopez lifted 205 kg in his second attempt and improved to 210 kg in his third. Carlos Nassar started with 213 kg and easily handled the weight. After his first attempt, the Bulgarian was already the champion, but he came out for a third attempt, ordering 224 kg. Successfully lifting this weight, Nassar set a new world and Olympic record. In the end, his result was 404 kg, which secured his confident victory.
Carlos Nassar was born in Paris to a Lebanese father and a Bulgarian mother.
The second place was taken by the Colombian Jeison Lopez with a result of 390 kg, and the Italian Antonino Pizzolato took third place with 384 kg. In the clean and jerk, Pizzolato twice failed to lift 212 kg, but on the third attempt, he managed the weight. He risked being left without a result, as the judges did not immediately credit his approach, and a video review was required.
The Armenian weightlifter Andranik Karapetyan took 7th place.
