On August 1, the sixth competition day of the Olympic Games in judo was held in Paris, during which medalists and new champions were determined in the weight categories up to 78 kg (women) and up to 100 kg (men).
In the weight category up to 78 kg among women, the Olympic champion was judoka from Italy Alyssa Belandi. On the way to the final, she defeated three-time Olympic bronze medalist from Brazil Mayra Aguiar in the 1/8 finals, then in the 1/4 finals she defeated the bronze medalist of the world championship from Ukraine Elizaveta Litvinenko, and in the semi-finals she was stronger than the representative of Portugal Patricia Sampaio.
In the final fight, Alyssa defeated the representative of Israel Inbar Lanir and won the title of Olympic champion.
In the weight category up to 100 kg among men, the Olympic champion was Ossetian judoka, representing Azerbaijan, Zelim Kotsoyev. On the way to the final, he defeated two-time European Championship medalist from Poland Piotr Kuchera in the 1/8 finals, then in the 1/4 finals he defeated the representative of Israel Piotr Palchik, and in the semi-finals he overcame two-time World Championship medalist from Uzbekistan Muzaffarbek Turoboyev.
In the final fight for gold, Zelim Kotsoyev defeated World Championship medalist from Georgia Ilya Sulamanidze and won the title of Olympic champion.
