The list of 122 weightlifters who will participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris has been finalized and is available for review. It includes 120 athletes who have gone through the qualification process, as well as two participants from the IOC Refugee Team. This article will examine the specifics of quota redistribution and the role of universal places in this process.
After receiving all confirmations, a slight redistribution of spots occurred. Due to the IOC’s exclusion of Belarusian athletes Petr Asayonok (89 kg) and Eduard Zazulin (+102 kg), their quotas were given to other countries — Canada (Robert Santavy, 89 kg), the Czech Republic (Kamil Kučera, +102 kg), and Estonia (Mart Seim, +102 kg). In the +102 kg weight category, two quotas were allocated because Kučera and Seim had identical rankings.
Additionally, four extra spots were allocated to the host country (France), and the last four places were reserved for universal places. Universal places are provided to athletes from countries that are traditionally underrepresented at the Olympic Games, ensuring broader international participation and increasing global interest in the sport.
Here is the list of countries that could receive universal quotas — only those countries that had fewer than eight participants in the last two Olympic Games were included:
Universal Weightlifting Quotas Granted:
- 61 kg - Kaimauri Erati (Kiribati).
- 102 kg - Ahmed Abuzreba (Libya).
- 49 kg (women) - Nicola Lagatiao (Guam).
- 81 kg (women) - Aja Pritchard Lolo (Vanuatu).
