On June 9 in Budapest, Cuban Luis Alberto Orta Sanchez won the "Polyak Imre & Varga Janos – 2024" tournament in the Greco-Roman wrestling category up to 67 kg.
In the final, Luis Orta Sanchez defeated Georgian Leri Abuladze with a score of 4-0. However, everyone remembered Sanchez's victory in the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Orta Sanchez wrestled against Iranian Esmaeil Eivazi. The Iranian was winning against the Cuban with 2 seconds left in the bout. After the final move, the wrestlers stopped fighting as there was no time left, and Eivazi went to celebrate his victory. But Orta Sanchez, being behind his opponent, jumped up and managed to execute a 4-point move, which brought him a 9-7 victory.
The Iranian was shocked, and Orta Sanchez made a miraculous comeback, but at the cost of his dignity.
For Esmaeil Eivazi, this victory was very important as it could have sent him to the 2024 Olympic Games instead of Mohammad Reza Geraei. The Budapest tournament determined who would represent Iran at the Paris Games. However, both became bronze medalists, and Geraei, who secured the Olympic quota, is likely to go to Paris.
Cuban Luis Alberto Orta Sanchez will also participate in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, but his participation was never in doubt, as he is the main leader of the Cuban team, the 2023 world champion, and the 2020 Olympic champion.
