IWF President Mohammed Jaloud and IWF Secretary General Antonio Urso met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan today to discuss preparations for the IWF World Championships to be held in the country in 2027. This is the first major IWF tournament to be held in Armenia, a decision that was made by the IWF Executive Board last March 29 in Phuket, Thailand.
Yerevan recently hosted the 2023 European Championships with great success, a competition that set new standards in terms of sports presentation, television production and spectator attendance. Building on this achievement, the IWF enthusiastically endorsed Armenia's bid to host the 2027 World Championships.
“The level of commitment from our friends in Armenia is amazing and the personal commitment and involvement of the Prime Minister is a strong guarantee that we will have a great competition in Yerevan! The support and professionalism at both government and national federation level is simply outstanding. I have no doubt that this championship will be a milestone in our history and will inspire many young athletes in Armenia,” said IWF President Mohammed Jaloud after the meeting with Mr. Pashinyan.
Also present at the press conference were Prime Minister's Chief of Staff Araik Harutyunyan, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Zhanna Andreasyan and Secretary General of the Weightlifting Federation of Armenia Pashik Alaverdyan.
