On August 11, the long-awaited Olympic Wrestling Games in Paris came to an end, where all 18 newly-minted Olympic champions were announced (freestyle, Greco-Roman and women's wrestling, all 6 weight categories)
After eight days of the tournament in Paris, many sensational and interesting events took place that shocked all wrestling fans.
Sensational defeat of the world and Asian champion Zholaman Sharenshbekov:
One of the most striking events was the unexpected loss of the Kyrgyz wrestler Zholoman Sharenshbekov in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games in Greco-Roman wrestling. In this fight, Zholoman met with the Japanese Kenichiro Fumita. In their previous meeting at the World Championship final, Zholoman won a confident victory over the Japanese and was considered the undisputed favorite in the fight for a place in the final of the Olympic Games. However, Kenichiro surprised everyone by defeating the main contender with a score of 4:3. Before this defeat, Fumita had only lost to Moldovan wrestler Victor Cioban at the 2021 World Championships. As a result, the Japanese broke Sharshenbekov's winning streak and won Olympic gold.
The winning streak of Olympic champion Yui Susaki came to an end:
The next day, on August 6, another event took place that went down in the history of not only women's wrestling, but also world wrestling in general. In the 50 kg weight category, the current Olympic champion, multiple world and Asian champion from Japan, the undefeated Yui Susaki and the representative of India Vinesh Phogat met. In the fight for a place in the 1/4 finals, Vinesh Phogat caught the Japanese woman on a mistake in the last seconds, earning two important points, which allowed her to win with a score of 3:2 and advance to the next round. Yui Susaki, who had never lost in her career before, was stopped because of this small mistake. Yui Susaki ended up winning the Olympic bronze medal, while Vinesh Phogat made it to the finals, but was eventually disqualified the next day for being 150 grams overweight during the weigh-in. As a result, Vinesh did not receive her silver medal and filed a lawsuit.
