Sargis Sargsian: The only Armenian tennis player on the Olympic Games

Sargis Sargsian (born 1973, Yerevan) is an Armenian tennis player who represented Armenia in three Olympic Games (1996, 2000, 2004).

In the world of sports, every nation strives to find its hero, whose achievements become a symbol of national excellence and an inspiration for young athletes. For Armenia, this hero is Sargis Sargsian, a tennis player whose outstanding achievements on the Olympic stage and in professional tennis have left an indelible mark.

Born in 1973 in Yerevan, Sargis Sargsian was the first and, so far, the only Armenian tennis player to participate in the Olympic Games. His Olympic journey began in 1996 in Atlanta, where he first represented his country on the global sports stage. He competed in the Games in Atlanta, Sydney, and Athens, achieving his best result in Atlanta 1996, where he ranked 17th.

Interestingly, the winner of the 1996 Olympic Games, where Sargis Sargsian competed, was an Armenian from the USA, Andre Agassi, who defeated Spain's Sergi Bruguera in the final.

However, the real breakthrough for Sargis came in 1997 when he won the ATP tournament in Newport, confirming his potential and talent. His triumph was just the beginning of a series of impressive achievements. Until 2006, Sargsyan participated in ATP tournaments, achieving high results and drawing attention to Armenian tennis.

One of the most notable moments in Sargis' career was his participation in the 1993 Summer Universiade, where he won a silver medal, becoming the first Armenian tennis player to be awarded at this prestigious international tournament. This success opened doors for many young athletes in Armenia, inspiring them to strive for greater heights.

Today, Sargis Sargsian continues his connection with sports, working as a coach in the United States. His company, Eliteprogram.tennis, offers young tennis players the opportunity to develop their skills under the guidance of an experienced professional.

Beyond his achievements on the court and coaching work, Sargsyan remains a symbol of Armenian sports and an inspiration for all who dream of global success. His unique journey from an Olympic participant to a successful coach and entrepreneur remains a valuable asset for the development of tennis in Armenia and beyond.

It is hard to imagine Armenia having another tennis player in the Olympic Games or the ATP top 100, making Sargis Sargsyan a unique representative of Armenian sports (representing Armenia).

Sargis Sargsyan's achievements also include:

  • Highest ATP ranking: 38th place in 2003.
  • 1 ATP title: victory at the Newport tournament in 1997.
  • 2 ATP finals: in 2003 in Moscow and St. Petersburg.
  • 2 doubles titles: victories at tournaments in Washington (with Yevgeny Kafelnikov) and Bucharest (with Karsten Braasch) in 2003.
  • 4 titles in ATP Challenger series.

Additionally, during his career, he achieved victories over such famous tennis players as Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, and Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
