At the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, boxing matches began on the first day and will continue until the end of the Olympics. Preliminary bouts took place on July 27, and on July 28, the round of 16 matches in the men's 92 kg weight category commenced.
Let's review all the results among men so far.
71 kg Weight Category
In the 71 kg weight category, Jordanian Zeyad Ishaish defeated the reigning world and Asian champion, Kazakh Aslanbek Shymbergenov, by split decision. The 25-year-old Jordanian had never won major tournaments before and had lost to Aslanbek Shymbergenov in the final of the 2022 Asian Championships but took revenge at the Olympics.
Also competing in the 71 kg weight category was Magomed Shahidov from Germany, who ended up at the Olympics by chance. The fact is, Turkish Tugrulhan Erdemir failed a doping test, and his place at the Olympics was taken by Magomed Shahidov, who had lost to Erdemir in the fight for the quota at the 2023 European Games. Shahidov learned that he would compete in the Olympics just 4 days before the tournament. In his first bout, Magomed lost to Tiago Muxanga from Mozambique.
92 kg Weight Category
The most interesting events occurred in the 92 kg weight category, where the round of 16 matches started, and several upsets took place.
Two-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion, Cuban Julio Cesar La Cruz, lost in his first bout. In the round of 16, he lost by split decision to his compatriot Loren Alfonso, representing Azerbaijan.
Two other Olympic favorites also met in the first round — European champion Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine (Italy) and Lazizbek Mullojonov (Uzbekistan). In this exciting matchup, the representative of Uzbekistan won by split decision.
Another surprise was the defeat of the European champion in the 86 kg weight category, Giorgi Kushitashvili. The Georgian lost by split decision to Tajik boxer Davlat Boltaev.
