The scandalous bout between Chamizo and Bayramov was reviewed by independent experts from UWW. The result: several referees were suspended until the end of the year, and the result of the bout was recognized as unfair. Despite this, Turan Bayramov remains the winner, as it is forbidden by international wrestling rules to change the outcome of bouts.
Italian Frank Chamiso and Azerbaijani Turan Bayramov fought in the final bout for the Olympic quota at the license tournament on Greco-Roman wrestling in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Then the bout ended with Bayramov's victory after a video-repeat. It caused a huge scandal because of unfair refereeing. Chamizo later admitted that he was offered money for the loss, but he refused and also accused the referees of corruption. The wrestling federation filed a formal complaint about the result of the bout.
The United World of Wrestling (UWW) recognized the referees' mistake and suspended them for a period of time. However, the result of the bout will not be reviewed.
«UWW formed two different panels to review the complaints and statements from each member of the refereeing body and the refereeing delegates were requested and forwarded to the UWW Administration. The refereeing delegates also submitted their co-signed report on the match.
The UWW panels reviewed the match and all alleged errors surrounding the match, including the refereeing sequences and scoring, the challenge decision by the refereeing delegates, and as well as the appointment and distribution of responsibilities among the defendants.
Both panels agreed that some actions during the bout were not scored correctly, including not spotting the passivity of the wrestler(s). It also agreed that the refereeing consultations were not efficient, a timing error was made and the challenge consultation suffered major shortcomings in its functioning.
