Armenian weightlifter Varazdat Lalayan won the silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in weightlifting in the super heavyweight category over 102 kg.
With a personal record of 467 kg, Lalayan took second place, 3 kg behind Lasha Talakhadze. The Georgian athlete became a three-time Olympic champion with a total result of 470 kg.
Another Armenian weightlifter, Gor Minasyan, who represents Bahrain, won the bronze medal with a result of 461 kg. This is his second Olympics. He was second in Rio 2016 and now third in Paris 2024.
After the snatch, Minasyan was the leader, ahead of Lalayan and Talakhadze by 1 kg, but in the clean and jerk, Gor managed only one successful lift, while Varazdat and Lasha competed for the gold. The 25-year-old Armenian was close to dethroning the Georgian, but failed to lift 256 kg in his third attempt. Talakhadze, although with difficulty, lifted 255 kg. One of the judges did not count his attempt, but the other two did, and Talakhadze became the champion.
