Avand Dorian has become the first graduate of the Armenian AGBU school (Los Angeles) to play in Division I of the NCAA.
The 19-year-old Armenian national team basketball player was chosen by the USC Trojans university team and will play in the top division of the NCAA in the 2024/25 season.
“I am very excited about the opportunity to be a part of the University of Southern California men’s basketball team, and I am fortunate to have the honor of representing AGBU and the rest of the Armenian community. I will do my best to embody what it means to be Armenian, being disciplined and always setting an example.
I see this not as a personal achievement, but as a big step for the Armenian community as a whole. I hope to inspire future generations of our community to take advantage of my achievements and surpass them,” Dorian said Zartonk Media.
Dorian became the Southern California champion with the AGBU Titans and was named league MVP three times. In his final high school season, Avand averaged 23.7 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.
Shooting guard Avand Dorian played for the Armenian national team in recent friendly matches against Guatemala and Ireland on June 21 and 23.
